Hello,

I started this blog just for the hell of it after reading a few blogs from fellow cyclist friends of mine. Their blogs got me interested in what I might have to say and how often I might say it. These posts will not be strictly about cycling, that was just a title for the blog that came to mind as I was filling out the necessary info......I might change it later. Some of my interests that might get written about on this blog are in no particular order....Cycling, Photography, Food, Working Out ( as opposed to cycling), movies, & trips that I have taken or might take in the future.
Thanks for checking in. If I write something you don't agree with, that's okay. These are my thoughts, not yours.

LUNAR BLOWOUT

While everyone else was waiting for the eclipse I had a totally different "lunar" experience. I use lunar in the sense of referring to the posterior part of our anatomy that we sometimes expose as a prank. Not so much that as the colon that leads to it.

If you have ever seen the movie "Bruce Almighty" and remember the monkey scene that is the closest that I can come to as far as what I went through last night. I am beating around the bush a little so as not to be too disgusting.

Over the last week and a half or so I have been pretty sick with the flu and my system has been a little messed up. That being said, over the last 3 or so day I have not needed to take a crap. Not that I shouldn't have, I have been eating like a champ. Well I thought I would be alright after I had the occasion to relieve a little pressure yesterday morning. But such was not the case. I work graveyard at a convenience store in Las Vegas and I have to wait til the store is empty so I can lock up and use the restroom. While I was waiting for one customer to lose his cash on the poker machine I had an overwhelming urge to crap. The hell with the rules I was going to lock the customer in the store and do my business. But, alas, this was also not to be the case. Literally from the time I got the urge and could head to the restroom (less than 30 seconds) my colon decided to let loose as I was walking their. I had absolutely no control. I felt as though that monkey coming in out the mexican guys ass in the afore mentioned movie was filling my shorts. I know, disgusting. But shit sometimes happens at inopportune times. The worst part is that all I could do was clean myself up as best as possible and go back to work as I work alone on the graveyard shift. This is an experience that I can honestly say that I hope never has the ocassion to occur again in my lifetime.

WHAT"S UP

WORK ALL DAY

It's been a couple of months now. I have been working 2 jobs almost full-time. Or one full-time and one 6-7 days a week. The second job (as it were) is as a freelance photographer for the local newspaper in Las Vegas. I wish I could make enough money at this job to make it my sole and only employment. I can make 600-700 a week depending on how many days I work. A little over $800 If I work everyday. That is definitely enough to live on but I can't guarantee how consistent it will be. It could be $800 on week and then $200 the next.....can't live on that. I am actually trying to get back ahead financially after being out of work for almost 9 months. I am trying to save up enough cash to buy a beater car. I have my motorcycle but sometimes a car is much more practical with carrying my gear and such.

FAST MOTHERFUCKERS (IMPRESSIVE TOO)

One of the jobs I covered last weeks was the Las Vegas NHRA event. Let me tell you if you have never stood 5 feet from a Funny Car or Top Fuel Dragster leaving the starting line you are missing out. That was probably the most powerful (and loud) thing I have ever been around in my life. I have been to the drags before but not that close.
The pro stock guys (210-220mph) were cool. Plenty loud and fast.  But when the big boys came to the line it was a whole different deal. WOW!!!!!!. Within on run of the cars I was almost begging for ear plugs. Ear piercing would be an under statement. They were ok when they were doing their burnout but once they actually took off down ste strip for real it was a whole new ball game. Not only were t hey loud but the force of their exhaust when they came by felt as though it could knock you over (and I weigh over 270lbs). I was pretty sure fillings were going to rattle free. Wouldn't have missed it for the world.

A BRIEF OVERVIEW

MY TRAINING (OR THE LACK OF IT)

I did a century yesterday. Proud of that. I also know I could have done much better. My training for the last two months has sucked (my diet sucked for most of the year or I would have been at least 50 lbs lighter)

In February I lost my job and was out of work for about 8 months. At the time I lost my job I said to myself "well I will just realx a little from working and spend more time in the gym". And I did For the better part of 6 months it was like a religion to me. I was in the gym 2-3 hours a day 5-6 days a week. Stairmaster, Elliptical, Life Cycle, Spin Class, walking 18 holes of golf. I went hard at these things. Then in about April I signed up for the RTC Viva Las Vegas Century and I started riding again. Mostly on the trainer initially and then started adding a couple of road rides as I got in better shape. I built up the rides from a base of about 40 miles to a high of about 85 miles by late July. Trust me that is hard in the heat of Las Vegas. And I hate mornings but I would force myself up at ungodly hours so that I could be done before it was hot enough to melt your skin.

About the time I did that 85 mile ride I think I came very close to heat stroke so it knocked me out for a week or  so and the workouts suffered for it. August was okay..but no great. AT the end of August and the beginning of September I spent about a week getting ready to move into a new apartment. That took about 5 days out of my training.

About the middle of the month I started doing freelance photography for a local newspaper again as well as starting a graveyard position at a local convenience store chain. This resulted in a grand total of 11 workouts in September. None longer than an hour and a half. Most 1 hour or less. Most on my trainer.

October was definitely not any better. I had a grand total of 3 workouts before my Century ride. 2 of these were  a long ride on Monday's and the third was a trainer ride. My longest ride was just under 60 miles.

As the time without a job grew longer and longer my drinking kept increasing. Which increased my eating and decreased my motivation for the gym. Not a great combo when you are trying to get in shape and lose weight. I am so glad I am working because it has severely decreased my drinking. Mostly due to a lack of time. But also because I have less stress in life.

All this being said I am proud of the fact that I went thru with the Century and completed it in a respectable time. My goal for the next year is to find a way to fit in my workouts, get in better shape, actually lose weight and do a century again next year. The goal will definitely be to do it in under 6 hours of riding time.

I CAN CHECK THAT OFF OF THE BUCKET LIST

RTC VIVA BIKE VEGAS 103 MILE RIDE

I felt much better than I had any right to feel during and  after this ride. I was woefully under trained and probably should have backed down to the 60 mile ride. But no, I am a masochist. Finished in 6:40 of actual riding time.

By all rights I should be writing a post that is titled "How Not To Train For A Century Ride". But apparently you can do less training than is necessary for a Century and still finish well and comfortably. I don't recommend it but it is doable. I way 275 pounds and I was pushing all but the hardest of hill with many of the so called healthy people. Makes me wonder what I could have done if I was maybe 80 pounds lighter and actually in shape. I am thinking under 5-1/2 hours easy. This ride had over 5000 feet of climbing and that beat me up pretty bad . Especially the 5 miles into the Red Rock Loop. You gain well over 1000ft in the first 5 miles. One tough mother.and there were a couple of other pretty good hills that I wish I had a 28 tooth gear to make life easier for my fat ass. I don't think I will do a lot of centuries, that is a lot of saddle time......but maybe 1-2 a year just to see if I can get better.

Enough for now I had 5-6 beers after the ride was over ( I still haven't peed) and I am feeling the effects. I was trying to get my kidneys working again. I read a long time ago that a couple of beers is a good way to do that if you are a little dehydrated after a marathon. I drank a lot during the ride and only had to pee once at the 20 mile mark. Should be peeing soon.

103 or DEATH

OKAY SO THAT'S A LITTLE SEVERE

Well, I am up/ It's 3:40 am. WTF!!!!. Oh yeah I am going to voluntarily torture myself (in fact I paid to do so) by riding my fat ass 103 miles this morning (and part of the afternoon.....and hopefully not the evening). I have got my coffee (Walmart brand rocks) I am eating my oatmeal, and I have had a tortilla with peanut butter and Nutella. I should be ready for this in about 6 months. Once I get past 35 miles it should be pretty easy for another 35-40 miles and then I will have to slug it out to get back to the finish at town square. Not looking for speed just to finish. It will be like my first marathon I ran back in 1995 when although I was doing a boatload of cardio (14-18 hours a week) I was not doing much running (25-28 miles a week). I suffered the last 3 miles in that event...and for the next week I could barely walk. I am going to have to buy a rubber donut for my butt if I want to sit down this week

I was ready for this a month and a half ago before I started working 2 jobs more or less full time. That being said I would rather be working full time and not have enough time to work out as opposed to the opposite situation. Good Luck to me and my fellow riders. I think their are about 1800 of us heading down the strip at 5:30 am followed by a 25 mile climb. And believe me that 25th mile is a B#$@H. It is affectionately known as the wall.

Oh yeah I feel that more important part of my pre-workout routine building up so I should be a little lighter at the start of the ride...lol.....you runners and bikers know what I mean.

TIME TO SHIT, SHOWER, & SHAVE (That's what Dad used to say before getting ready for work)

Time to go and have my morning constitutional and reading session to clean out the system. Then shower, dress and meet my ride. I haven't figured out how I am getting home as of yet. I felt bad enough about having my friend wake up at 4am to give me a lift there, but she is great.

LATER......MUCH LATER.....REALLY MUCH MUCH LATER

I will file a report on the ride and results when I am done and have had a few beers to "relax"

A NEW LIFE

WOW, IT'S BEEN A MONTH

It has been a while since I posted again. Just haven't felt like writing anything.

LESS THAN TWO WEEKS

Until I am supposed to ride in the RTC VIVA BIKE VEGAS 103 mile ride. I rode 55 miles yesterday to see how I was feeling. I haven't had a long ride in about a month so I was very unsure of my fitness. I have worked out 3-4 times a week during this time but not for an extended period of time. After the ride yesterday I feel as though I will be okay for all but about 5 miles of the 103 mile ride. That 5 miles would be the climb in Red Rock Canyon. Mile 4-5 is affectionately known as "The Wall". it is very tough but after that it is overall down hill for about 35-40 miles and by then I will be 70+ miles into the ride. The ride is flat for the first 8-9 miles and then a steady climb for about 20 miles. It is going to be fun. It will hopefully be my first successful attempt at a century.  I was well on my way to being in shape for this ride until I moved and then started working 2 jobs over the last month. I am going to ride 4- times this week and next with a long run on Monday of hopefully 65-70 miles to finish getting ready. The nice thing is that it is finally starting to cool off so I won't have the 100+ degree heat beating me up on the ride. I am planning on starting somewhere near the back of the pack and gradually moving up until we are thru the hills and then cruise as much as possible for the downhill sections. I am not aiming to be a speed demon, just finish. I figure that it will take 7-8 hours, hopefully closer to 7 hours, to finish the ride.

JOBS

Due to the fact that the local newspaper laid off 6 full time photographers I have been able to pick up work as a freelancer. If the work continues at the pace that it has been for the last month It will be great. I have been getting 4-6 days a week shooting. It is not great money but it is $120 a day to shoot 1-2 assignments.
In addition to this I started a job as a cashier on graveyard for a local convenience store company. Definitely not a rent job but it is a steady income that I can use to pay the rent and utilities.
Between the two jobs I should be comfortable financially. I have to put in some long days with limited sleep but at least I can pay the bills and maybe save a little money for the next time I am out of work. Maybe even enough to be able to move when my lease on the apartment is up in about a year.

IT"S BEEN A WHILE

It has probably been about two months since I wrote anything on my blog. I have thought about it a few times. Just haven't been able to make myself get to it.

OLD HOME NEW HOME

AS of Thursday  I have been living in a new apartment. The house went up for auction on Wednesday. I guess some one bought it because they put up eviction notices yesterday. Still have a few things to move but they are just small stuff. I have to call the realty company on Tuesday and see if they will give me cash for keys as their notice stated. Could be over a $1000. I am not looking to damage the house. It's not their fault.

2 DOGS

The only reason I stayed in the house so long was to give a better environment for my dogs. G.G. & Sam. They have always had a yard to play in and go as they please. Now I have to take them for walks. I try and get in 3-4 walks a day since I am not working right now (or for the last 7 months). They didn't eat for the first 2 days in the new apartment. Stress I thnk. Finally tonight they chowed on their dog food. I had some chicken for dinner and gave them a couple of pieces and then they ate their food. I think they remembered they were hungry. Haha.
My big dog G.G., until yesterday, had never pooped on a leash so she is trying to get used to that also. She has never had to. Like I said she always had a yard. And I would take her to the dog park. One of the things I am going to miss the most is being able to spray her down with a hose. She loves it.
Well I have the lease for another 363 days so we will have to make the best of it.

ON A LIGHTER NOTE

Have you ever been in a room full of deaf people. I am not trying to be rude or mean  but they are damn noisy.  Plus the combination of sign language and actual speech comes out sort of like a bad martial arts movie. You now, where the lips move and then you hear the sound.

FANIA ALL_STARS

I love the my Fania All-stars channel on Pandora. Can't understand a word but I love the music

PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN

STAR SPANGLED BANNER

As a kid my dad was in the military, so we lived on a number of bases through the years. Tonight I wen to one of the local fireworks displays and it reminded me of that time. Whenever you went to the movies you had to stand and watch a small video with the National Anthem before every movie.  During this time everyone was respectful and quiet during this time. As a child it seemed a little "corny". I don't know if that is the right word for how how I felt but it is what comes to mind. I MISS THOSE TIMES. In my later years I realize how i taught you to respect the beliefs of our country, whether you agree or not. I wish that we still had to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in classrooms or the National Anthem at public events. I don't care if it is not politically correct. This is "The" United States of America and we should be proud of being citizens of this country. Flaws and blemishes included. I still don't see a mass exodus of people leaving The United States for other  "better" countries. Oh Yeah, that's because there aren't any better countries

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

GOT THE BIKE BACK

I took the bike in for a tune-up the other day and got it back on Friday. So on Saturday I took it out for a quick spin. Well it was supposed to be quick. The bike performed fantastically. I didn't do to bad either. I had planned on a quick, flat, 25-35 miles just to get used to being on the road again. Well I extended it out to 40 miles and threw in a few small hills. Felt great. I wasn't even tired. I easily had another 15-20 miles in my legs. Even the hills that I rode were pretty easy. Not fast but not stressful either. The goal was to stay in the seat for all the climbs and that was accomplished. I think I will stick to the same basic route I took for the next few weeks until I actually get my "road" legs under me. I will gradually add another 20 miles to these rides over the next month or so. I plan on keeping the route in a mostly north -south direction. In Vegas if you go east to west you are setting yourself up for some pretty good climbs and I am not ready for that quite yet. The good things were that I felt great, my gym workouts have apparently been worth the effort, and I had a jersey that fit.I spend about 2 hours in the gym on most days and I can honestly say that those workouts are by far more strenuous than this 40 mile ride. There's no coasting on the stairmaster.

BEEN A WHILE

RTC 103

I signed up for the RTC Viva Las Vegas 103 mile ride in October. That gives me 4+ months to actually get in shape. Should be doable, even enjoyable. I am up to 45 miles on my long ride and could easily do 60 if needed. Gotta work on the weight loss. I want to get down to around 210-220 lbs by then. That would be a loss of 50-60 lbs in 4 months. If I can acheive this loss the ride will be a piece of cake. I did 85 miles last year when I was much nearer 295lbs

DANCING  I  THE GYM

While resting after a recent workout I spied a lady that was having a little bit of fun on the treadmill. She appeared to be doing some sort of salsa dance at low speed on the treadmill. It was a bit wierd to watch and I was glad that I was not near her when I worked out. It would have driven me nuts to have her looking as spastic as she did in the corner of my eye.

ARNOLD

    Two Thing
          1. If the shake weight worked would one of your arms be a s big as Arnold due to masturbation (okay that is admittedly not really about Arnold)
          2. If Arnold had paid attention to the bible he would not have ended up with a kid from his housekeeper
" Spare the Rod, No kids from the Staff"

WHY DOES WALMART COFFEE TASTE BETTER THAN STARBUCKS

Do I really need to say anything more?

DOGS IN STORES

Why do people feel that they can bring their "little" dogs with them wherever they go. I was in Barnes & Noble the other night and this couple has their newly over-paid for mutt in the store while they researched books on this brand of dog. I am sorry keep the dogs the hell out of the store. They aren't that cute.

CELL PHONES AT THE GYM

Leave them at home. Dammit!!!! The world will survive if you don't answer the phone while you work out.
     1. You Aren't really working out if you are talking on the phone
     2. You could work out much harder if your weren't on the phone
     3. I really don't want to have to hear about your life, or lack there of.

REDROCK CANYON

PHOTOS

I went out to Redrock Canyon today to do a favor for a fellow cyclist who is putting on an event that is tied in to 9-11 this year. Apparently there are similar events going on in NY City, Washington DC, & Pennsylvania as well as Vegas. It was a good time. The good thing was that at least 3 people came by to check and make sure we were okay because I was sitting on the ground and the rider kept going back and forth while my friend stood behind me making sure I didn't get hit by passing cars.

85 DOLLARS

RTC VIVA BIKE VEGAS

After the nachos I got on line and signed up for the RTC Bike Vegas 103 mile ride in October. This year the ride goes down that Vegas Strip for the start of the ride. Granted at 5:30 in the morning but it should still be fun. Had to sign up by today or the price was going up another $15. Plus it gives me something to aim for in the fall. Wanted to do this ride the last 2 years but work always got in the way. Hopefully I will have a job soon and I will be able to work around this event since I have paid for it already. I wonder if this constitutes a good use of my unemployment pay.

WAY TO MANY BEERS LAST NIGHT

WEDDING PHOTOS

Dropped off some wedding photos to a bartender friend of mine last night. Had a few beers while she and friends looked over the photos and I talked to her husband and other friends at the bar. Didn't get home til around 2:30am and had a huge order of Roberto's Nachos (Carne Asada of course). Slept til after 2pm. Have thoroughly wasted most of the day. Luckily all I really had planned was to go to the gym so that I will do in a short while. Just waiting for the big ass breakfast I cooked to settle down before I head out the door for my 2 hours of gym time. Won't be doing that again for quite a while. It just takes to much out of me these days. Sucks to get old!

G.G.

SOUTHERN DINNER

HARD RIDE

Got in 35 miles on the trainer. 2.25 hours on the bike. Great workout. Definitely feeling stronger. Now to get the weight down so I can take that effort outside

YUMMO

Unfortunately dinners like tonite's don't make that very easy. I was in the store the other day and the urge for chicken livers came into my head. I haven't had those in like 20 years. My mom used to make them all the time when I was younger and I love them. SO I fried me up some of those bad boys and had them with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. There wasn't a damn thing healthy about tonight's dinner but it was good!!!! I don't do that to often but I just had an urge. It was the first time that I made them so it was something new. Back on the wagon tomorrow.

INTEROP

Got to get up early tomorrow and the next day to go make a little money. I have 4 convention booths to shoot over the two days. 3 tomorrow and 1 on Thursday. A quick $1200 for about 4 hours of work plus a little time spent on the computer.

TALL BUILDING

ONE LONG CLIMB

Today, for the first time in a long time, I climber over 400 flights on the stair master. It took just about an hour. It definitely felt good.

FROM GOOD TO BAD

I made a good breakfast yesterday that all the intentions of being "healthy" and then things went bad. It started with scrambled egg whites (good for you) and leftover cajun rice with sausage(which was low cal) from there it went bad. In order o cook the eggs, rather than add a bit of non-stick spray I cooked off 5 pieces of bacon (yummy) then I used the oil from the bacon to cook the eggs (great flavor). In order to eat them I made the mixture into breakfast tacos. 4 tortillas with salsa later  the meal was complete. Got to say that was damn good. Maybe not good for me, but good to eat. That is probably just one of many examples I could come up with in my life where I have found a way to eat poorly with good ingredients.

WHO DECIDED

FOOD SERVING SIZE

Who was the guy who decided that a can of Pringles potato chips contained 6 servings. Who are we kidding. I might be able to call it 3 servings if I counted the 4 chips that my dogs shared. Please, that can didn't take the 15 minutes it took to finish off my dinner of Cajun Rice with Sausage. That's why I typically don't buy these items while shopping. I realized a l0ong time ago that I have absolutely no ability to control the portions that I eat. A pack of Oreos should easily last over a week if you follow along with the serving guidelines. I am not sure, but I believe, that 10 Oreos with milk  is not a single serving. Does it still count as one serving if you go back for more cookies and use the same glass of milk.

CAJUN RICE WITH SAUSAGE (really good, and reasonably healthy, 288 cal per serving)

2              Slice bacon
12           Ounces Spicy Chicken Sausage, Cubed
1              Small Onion, Chopped
2              Stalks Celery, chopped
1              Small Green Bell Pepper, chopped
2              Cloves Garlic, minced
2              Tspn chopped fresh Thyme or 1 tspn dried thyme
1              Cup Long Grain Rice
1              Cup Chicken Broth
2              Cups chopped frozen okra
2              Tbsn chopped fresh parsley

1. Heat a Large cast-iron skillet over high heat
2. Add Bacon and cook until crisp, about 2 minutes
3. Transfer Bacon to paper towel to drain
4.Add Sausage, onion, celery, and bell pepper & cook, stirring, until the vegetables are soft and the
Sausage begins to brown, about 3 minutes
5. Add the garlic, thyme, 1 tspn salt, & ½ tspn pepper to the skillet
6. Stir in rice
7. Add Chicken broth & water, and bring to a boil
8. Stir in okra, then reduce heat to low, cover & simmer for about 15 minutes
9. remove from heat and let sit, covered, 5 minutes.
10. Add Bacon & Parsley and fluff with fork

WEIRD DREAM

BOWLING ALLEY

I had a strange dream this morning right before I woke up (doorbell rang, dogs went nuts, and nobody was at the door). I dreamt that I was taking part in a bowling tourney or some sort. I had a brand new ball and I was in a the tourney against a team of Asians.Everything was fine until it was my turn to go. When I went to pick up the ball it didn't fit my fingers. And when I went to throw the ball all the pins weren't there so I couldn't go. Every time I would reset and get ready to go 9 out of the 10 pins would be gone. After a few times of this I got pissed and decided to go talk to the desk person. Here's the weird part, Ozzy Osborne was the desk person. I would like to say more but that's when I woke up. I have no idea how Ozzy got in there I have never been a fan of his.
Weird, Huh?

THE HUMANITY

ANOTHER SENSELESS LEOPARD KILLING

This was outside a tanning center connected to my health club. It was there when I walked by to go have a bite to eat at a nearby restaurant and it was still there when I came back. I couldn't resist taking a quick photo with the phone.I am thinking that she got a little more tan in some areas than she normally would.

BIKING IT

TIME TRIAL

Haven't been feeling that great this week so I took a few days off in the middle of the week to get better. Worked out for an hour at an easy pace on the stair master yesterday just to get back into things. Today I took up a challenge on the daily mile to do a 15 mile time trial. Mind you the winds were in excess of 20 mph outside so I did my usual and hit the indoor trainer. did the 15 miles in 49:15 not bad. It really didn't feel like I was pushing that hard. I kept the resistance at a medium level. I didn't want to feel like I was climbing a hill. I know this isn't the same as being on the road but it is a pretty good workout.
I love the indoor type of activities because they offer a means of more or less scientifically comparing one workout to the next (or the last). I have always felt that although I have liked running races in the past on the road or seeing if I can out bike others, It seemed as though I was not staying in as good  of shape as if I was inside working hard in the gym. Plus I love to sweat, and see the sweat on the floor underneath the machine. It's proof that I worked

RANDOM THOUGHTS

WIFFLE BALL

I read a column in a local Vegas newspaper (Ron Kantowksi - Review Journal) that was pretty funny. The point of the column was that there is a community in New York that is trying to outlaw Wiffle Ball from state supported youth camps and daycare centers due to its' "significant risk of injury". Seriously!!! The only injury that I ever received due to a wiffle ball or bat was when I was laying on my back on the living room floor and my 2 year old brother decided my testicles would make the perfect target and swung the bat as if he were Albert Pujols in the home run contest. Ouch!!!!!

HOW WILL THEY TEACH

Las Vegas, just like every other community in the country, is having to reduce spending in all areas of its' budget. Including education spending. My favorite number is that they are going to cut 50% of spending in textbooks & supplies. Yeah, what the hell, students don't need text books to study and follow along. They have great memories and visualization abilities. The teacher will just read from her copy of the text book while the students attentively listen along. Wait. I need to stop laughing so I can continue to type. Granted this will save on any number of shoulder and back injuries that occur due to the students having to carry the books home everyday. How about some smart person come up with a way to put the book on disk so that those students who wish to, and are able to, can use these disks instead of the printed versions. I am willing to bet that this would save a considerable number of dollars as there would no longer be the printing costs of the hardcover books.
Hopefully the teachers will not have to have printed copies of the tests, assignments, etc or have to write on a chalkboard to assist the children with their learning the assignments. Are the products needed for these tasks supplies.

HARVARD GRADUATE

I love the fact that Donald Trump is questioning the educational background of Barack Obama. I am not a fan of Obama but the man did graduate from Harvard as a Magna Cum Laude (donald thought that was what his women di when they were with other men). I don't care how you got there but when you finish that way you deserved to be there.
I haven't seen Trump's birth certificate (long or short form) or his educational achievements being offered up for review.
Aren't most of the Donald's buildings made of glass. Better watch out that nobody picks up those stones he's throwing and chucks them back at him.

FUNNY

Who would the comedians of America wish would be running for president Donald Trump or (if possible) George W. Bush. I think even W. would go out on the road with a routine about Trump. Hell, he's hoping Trump wins just so that America remembers him fondly...lol

OOOOOOPPPPPS!!!!

The Post Office screwed the pooch in a big way this time....not only can they not make money but they manage to piss away the money they have been given to operate.
It seems as though a new stamp was printed to commemorate the Statue of Liberty. On the stamp was an image of the Lady of Liberty. Here is where the "oops" part come in. The image of the Lady of Liberty is apparently not of the statue that so famously resides in New York. It was, in fact, an image of the now very famous statue located at the corner of Tropicana & Las Vegas Blvd. Yep. Right their on the strip in Las Vegas. Do you think anyone will get fired over that one? Wait Donald Trump could do it. "Your Fired" he's good at that. More importantly, who do you think gets to pay for this mistake? How long will it take for them to ask for more money because they can't afford to operate?

19 STRAIGHT DAYS

DAY OFF

Finally had to take a day off from the gym......eyes burning, body feels like crap and I am tired. Could be allergies, could be catching something. Still not sure. Don't feel great today but I may make a run at working out.

QUESTIONS

I hate when I go to an interview and they ask you those stock questions from a printed form. You know: Where will you be in five years, why did you apply here, what makes you right for this job, etc....Be creative come up with something new. Get to know the person through conversation. If it's a sales job who cares about 5 years from now or why you applied at their business. We are going to lie if our real answer doesn't fit their situation

KILL THE IRISHMAN

Very good movie about the mob in Cleveland Ohio in 1976. There were 36+ bombings in that city during that year. Wow

CHINESE FOOD

WHERE DID THAT DOG GO??

After my 2+ hour workout today I went for a bite to eat at a Teriyaki place connected to the gym. While I understand that this is not a "Chinese" restaurant it is an Asian restaurant. While walking up to the restaurant I witnessed a Boston terrier run in the front door and disappear into the kitchen. Never saw the dog reappear before my food was served....hmmmm!!!!

COWBOY MOUTH !!!!

ROCKS VEGAS !!!

Got out of the house to go see a show at the Redrock Casino. The band is called Cowboy mouth. They are from New Orleans and the only other thing you need to know is that they rock and if you get the chance go see their show. I have only paid for two shows in the last 3 years and they were both Cowboy Mouth and both times they rocked the house. I wish I could afford to go see them in New Orleans at the N.O. Jazz festival when they are on stage before Kid Rock & the Neville Brothers (no not together). What an afternoon that would be.

WHY DO PEOPLE DO THIS

AT THE GYM

I  have been putting in about 2.25 hours a day in the gym or on the bike lately. And it feels good. The goal is to get these workouts up to 3 hours over the next 3-4 weeks. Gonna have to add another activity to make it happen while I increase the intensity on the ones I currently use to workout.

I have been spending a lot more time at the gym the last few weeks and a few things bother me about the people at  the gym

SUNGLASSES
Really? At the Gym? I know there is a lot of daylight that spills into the upper floor of the gym I go to but It ain't that bright. I saw two people today that were wearing there sunglasses on while using various cardio equipment. I guess you just can't be too cool.

TALKING

Why is it that people feel as thought they need to talk loud enough for people on the surrounding 20 machines to hear them. This girl hopped on the machine right next to me and proceeded to yammer on for like 10 minutes. I don't think she actually took a breath until she left that machine and finally started to workout on a stair master 3 rows away. Did I mention she wasn't even working out on the machine next to me. Just shut up and workout. I just feel like starting to talk and sing really loud so that these people have to listen to me while they are trying to talk.

HEADPHONES

This one is not a problem just a question. Have you seen the number of people wearing these new fangled DR. Dre sponsored head phones (I even saw Siegfried of Siegfried & Roy fame wearing these). If I am right these things are pretty damn expensive. I know I wouldn't be wearing something this expensive while I am sweating like a pig. Maybe that's the key, they aren't really working out. They're just pretending to workout. How much better can the sound be than my $10 Sony head phones actually be while I am working out.

14 DAYS IN A ROW

THE GYM

I have managed to workout 14 days in a row, either in the gym on the stair master & elliptical or in the home on my bike with the trainer. Starting to see some results as I have gotten my diet a little more in order and am still striving do bring it more so in line. The trainer rides are up to 30 miles in about 1:45 not bad. I have been putting in some pretty good workouts on the bike. Adding resistance & speed as well as throwing in quite a bit of interval work. The stair master has  gone from a daily starting point of level 2 to starting at level 8 and building resistance in 2 pyramids that take an hour to complete. It feels good to see the results continuing. I have a couple of tentative goals for the late summer and fall. Want to do a 5K under 30 minutes somewhere in July or August. A century bike ride in October or November. Last but not least a 1/2 marathon in December in under 2 hours. All of these are achievable but they are gonna take some effort and dedication to get there. Woohoo it feels good to have a goal, and to have the mindset to feel like I can achieve it.

FRIENDS

In all of the years that I have been working out it is still amazing how few of my friends I actually see go to the gym or participate in physical activities. There are very few things I can say I would like to be able to do on a daily basis and be able to enjoy nearly as much as working out. The people I ride bikes with are very active but not many others that I know. Some have gone to the gym for short periods of time some never think about going to the gym or riding a bike. Or even going for a walk. I wish they would but you can't force them to do so.

NEW GAME

STRIPPER, COCKTAIL WAITRESS, or MARRIED A RICH GUY

This is a game I thought of as I was getting off of my motorcycle to go to lunch. There was a young lady with a kid and an older lady getting out of a HUMMER. Now this game might be playable only in a city like Vegas where all three of the above are a viable career choice. Vegas is a bit like LA/Hollywood in that it is not who you are or what type of person you are but what kind of job, money, car do you have. Vegas has become a very fake town in the last 10-15years. This "fake-ness" makes a lot of things harder in Vegas. Jobs, dating, etc. it's just not as cool to live here as it was a number of years ago. For me it seems like this change was on its way about the time that the Bellagio opened in 1998. It changed the type of people who come to play, live, & work in Vegas.

BACK ON THE BIKE

QUESTION ABOUT EFFORT

My question is this, if I do a two hour ride on the bike (indoors or out) and I do a 2 hour workout in the gym ( stair master, elliptical, etc...) how do I compare them. I mean I leave the gym after 2 hours feeling wasted from the effort but I can get off the bike after two hours and except for my ass be sore from the seat I feel as if I could go again. So does that mean that my gym workout is the same as a 30-32 mile ride or that a 2-hr ride on the bike is not really that hard at 15-16mph. Just wondering.

FREMONT PHOTOS

NEON FUN

Just a couple photos from the other night on Fremont Street. I like neon composites when the neon is moving.

LAS VEGAS 6-WAY CHILI

CORN

Is the secret ingredient that makes it go from plain ol' Cincinnati 5-Way to my Las Vegas 6-Way Chili

Cooked my favorite Chili tonight. It starts out pretty healthy. Turkey, Black Beans, Corn, Peppers, Broth, Onions, Garlic...and then I throw a bit of cheese on top and this time I put some pasta underneath. I have never had to eat pasta with a fork before.

I found this recipe for Turkey & Black Bean Chili a number of years ago and have been occasionally updating it until this point. Let me tell you it is the bomb....good enough to sell.

BLLLAAAAHHHH

THAT WAS MY NIGHT

I went out to try and have a good time tonight. Did not succeed. I gave the old college try and was sorely disappointed

First, I went to the local street fair known as "First Friday's". It is "supposed" to be an "Art" fair. Quotes used on purpose. This shit sucked unless you were 20 something, and I mean 20, 21, 22 at the most. I have been to this event in the past years and it has been pretty cool, but this time it was a big let down. There were less artists and those that were there were extremely less talented. I am a photographer. I don't consider myself an artist but I do consider myself some one who knows and appreciates art of all genres. The only art that I saw there were actually water colors by Gordon Parks. I know he is a very high standard but I don't hold all artists up to his standard. I have bought items at this, and other, art festivals in the past but I couldn't have forced myself to do so this time if my life depended on the purchase.

Secondly, I was going to go see a concert on Fremont Street that was put on as part of the CMA (country music association awards) Awards in Vegas this weekend. Well I had read that the show was supposed to start at 10pm but low and behold it was not scheduled to start until 10:45 pm. And that was entirely too long to hang out with no entertainment and a shitload of drunk cowboys.

Third, I decided to go to a "free" comedy show at a local lounge. I had been before. Or rather I had tried to go once in the past and the 10pm show had still not started when I left at 10:45pm. This time I decided to show up late and catch the chow as it was just starting. I got there at about 10:30pm and figured it would start before 11pm. At 11:30 it finally got going. How was it you might ask. Let me just say that I don't consider myself a comedian but I had re-written 3-4 of the jokes before the "comedians had left the stage. And my covers were far better. Granted it was free so I didn't expect much but Damn!!! give me something to remember tomorrow. One good joke among 45 comedians that isn't much to ask for.

Better luck next weekend.

SERIOUSLY BALLIN'

NOT A CAPTAIN, NOT A COLONEL

He was the Major. Major Taylor to be precise. I am reading a book about this gentleman right now. He was a cyclist in the late 1890's - 1900's. A black cyclist in an era of cycling when cyclists were big stars of the era. I am about a third of the way thru the book and these guys were pretty impressive. I read one passage where he was pushing a 108 in ch ring and another where it was  114 inch gear. It would take a few laps just to get uncorked and really push these gears. But once they did they could fly. On a 23lb bike with this huge gearing and a flying start he was at one time able to do a mile in under 1 minute and 20 seconds. He was able to go in excess of 45mph when the speed of a car at that time topped out at 39mph. I am only about a third of the way thru the book but I am sure I will be even more impressed as I progress. One guy was able o do a mile in 57 seconds. Granted, he was following a train as a drafting device but still. Wow!!!

LINCOLN LAWYER

Matthew McConnaughey actually made an enjoyable movie. Lincoln Lawyer was actually pretty good. It was worth the price of an afternoon admission with free popcorn and my own bottle of water.

SHITTY DRIVERS

BET SHE IS SCARED

I left my workout today and I was pulling of the parking lot some dipshit lady driver decided she need to speed up and see if she could get as close as she could to my front wheel as she cut me off. Did I mention I ride a motorcycle. I was laying on my horn and she just kept coming over in my lane. She must have had to get home to her 12 kids who are living here on my dime. Well I was in a mood so when I realized she was going the same direction as I was (probably because I was following her to scream at her) I decided to follow her as far as she was going. This went on for about 2-3 miles. I didn't get to close in case she did something stupid but I made sure she knew I was there. When she finally made a turn I saw that she had her cell phone in her hand on the steering wheel. What I am wondering is did she have that next to her ear when she cut me off or did she take it out to call her friends or the police because she thought a crazy guy was following her......I hope she was scared shitless!!!

FERRARO DIES

I was not a big fan of Geraldine Ferraro....not a hater either ( she really had no effect on my life, and was probably a good woman) but she did provide me with a bit of a chuckle during the '84 election. I was on a month long motorcycle trip that summer (had a great time) traveling from Las Vegas to Seattle and back down the coast to San Diego. Well, while I was walking around the wharf area of San Francisco I came upon a table selling buttons and the one I saw is probably one of the best I can recall. It was a simple button with a simpler play on words, "Wally & the Beave in '84". Love it. Wish I had bought one.

STEREOTYPES...

.....are right because they are true. Did you see the stroy about the guy who robbed a bank and was caught when he ran out on his fast food bill that he placed after he robbed the bank. Here are the facts as reported

     Bank Robber:       Black Male Adult
     Fast Food Meal:   Ribs!!!!!

Come on Fuzzy Zoeller couldn't have written that one.

5 YEARS

THAT'S HOW LONG IT HAS BEEN

...since my dad passed away. Actually it was 5 years ago yesterday. I don't know why it didn't occur to me yesterday but today after I got done working out it popped into my small mind that yesterday was the "anniversary". I miss my dad a lot. There are days when I am sitting in the house, or watching a tv show that reminds me of him, or when I just feel as though I haven't lived up to his expectations that I find myself in tears over something that normally would feel very small to me. There are many times I look up to the pictures I have of My mom & dad on my living room wall and just wish I could sit down and talk to them.  I miss them & love them.

CELL PHONES

I find that while I am working out at the gym I have to control myself when the dipstick next to me starts talking on the phone while they are "working out". You can't workout and be on the phone. Even Oprah understood this fact. I am not sure that she meant cell phones in particular but the gist was right when she said "if you ain't sweatin', you ain't working out". I mean it is not possible to work out at a pace that will raise the heart rate and induce sweating if you are on the cell phone...either texting or talking. Focus on the workout. You'll be better for it. I have not noticed anyone who is the leader of a country or a company that is on the phone. If your income or life doesn't depend on it put the phone away. Take the time. Allow yourself 1-2 hours to do something good  for yourself. For a number of years now I have taken my phone and put it in my fanny pack wit hthe walet and watch so that I don't have to see/hear it ring while I am working out. That's some " me luv me time".

THE OLD DAYS

18:00 MINUTES

Had a good workout today. Or at least a good workout by my current standards. Back in the 90's I went from around 290 pounds down to around 195-200 lbs. Stayed ther for about 5 years. I have long since gained back 90 percent of that weight. Mostly due to laziness or apathy but alos due to a number of years wear I worked extremely long hours and just couldn't motivate myself to hit the gym, though I did keep up not one but two memberships. I would get back in the mood, or mode, every 6 months or so and do or say all the right things about how I was going to lose this weight this time. And occasionally I would lose 25-35 lbs. Right back it would come with the next crisis at work or in my life.
I still want to lose that weight and if I actually get my diet in line it will happen pretty easily considering the time I am spending in the gym or on my bike these days (due to my current state of unemployment). Today I got on the treadmill after an hour on the stair master. My current time on the treadmill is 40 minutes. I warm up for about 10 minutes and then I alternate 1 minute at 6.2mph and 1 minute at 4.2mph. I just started back on the treadmill and I am still very heavy so that is good for now. But it got me thinking about the past. In 95-96 I was running pretty strong (18 min 5k) and I would go into the gym and do my workouts on the treadmill ( I enjoy the constancy of the gym and the ability to scientifically repeat workouts to measure today against yesterday). Today  I felt pretty good about "run/walking 3 miles in 38 minutes today. In the past I wouldn't have felt like "wasting my time" with such a workout. I used to go into the gym at 2am in the morning before the day of a race and do 45 minutes on a stair master and run 3 miles in around 24 minutes and not even be tired. In fact I would get up 3 hours later and go run a local 5K race just for fun, usually in a sub 19 minute pace.I am able to be happy with what I accomplished today but some where in the back of my mind is that little guy going you can do better. you can go faster. He doesn't care that I way 80 pounds more than when I could do this in the past. My goal for this year is to run a few 5k's in the last 3-4 months of the year in sub 25 minutes. Nothing grand, but it is on the road back. Hopefully I can lose some of the weight that I want to to lose so that this goal is possible. One foot in front of the other and continuing to adjust my diet will definitely make this possible.

WHAT TIME IS IT

NO SERIOUSLY

I woke up at around 11:30 this morning and promptly went to the couch and fell right back to sleep for a couple of hours (one to many beers and a hard workout yesterday). The problem is I don't think that my phone reset automatically as it usually does so I am honestly not sure what time it is right now. I believe that it is 4 pm-ish but not sure. Maybe this post will tell me what time it was posted. Got an interview with 24 hour fitness for a graveyard position tomorrow. Might have another interview for a bartenders position this week also. Have to start a week long photo assignment tomorrow for a local convention company. I have to go back 2-3 times a day and shoot the same location for changes in the set-up. Won't make much from this but I will make it up next week when I shoot the real job for the company. Hopefully make between 1500-2000 for this job.

IS LAS VEGAS CATHOLIC

A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS

I was watching the news this evening and heard a story about the Las Vegas school district. It seems as though there are a number of the local high schools that are falling below acceptable standards. Due to this fact they are relieving some of the teachers and administrators of their duties. I think that is great if they are not doing the required job get them the hell out of the school. That's the way that it works in the real world of employment...either do the job or they will find some one new who can do the job. One problem, the school district has siad that they are not firing the teachers and administrators. They are "relocating" them. Man, do I feel sorry for the new schools that get stuck with these personnel. It made me wonder if our schools were run by former administrators of the Vatican. After all, they were "relocated" also.

CHEAP AT THE MOVIES

SAVE SOME MONEY

I went to the movies yesterday and managed to spend less than $10. Trust me that is no easy feat. Even if you go to the bargain matinee in the afternoon.

Movie ticket                  $7.75
Popcorn                        $0.75 ( Local Casino gives away free small popcorn on Wednesday, upgrade for $0.75
Water                           $0.49 ( Arrowhead water at Albertson's -vs- $5.75 for a Large Soda)
Candy                           $0.01 ( Who knows it was 2 pieces of hard candy I brought along in my pocket to quell
that sweet tooth -vs- $3.75 for a box of butterfinger bites that is actually less
candy than 1 candy bar at 7-11)

Total Cost                      $9.00

I can actually remember when that whole day might cost me as little as $1-2 when I was a kid living on an Air Force base. I don't go to an evening movie unless I have a freeby ticket to get in. I also have a discount card for another brand of theaters that gets you the occasional free movie ticket, or soda and discount candy and popcorn on midweek days

SSSSHHHHHH Again

THE 2ND INTERVIEW

Git a call back for a second interview at a local casino for a bartender job. It's only an on-call position but it is a foot in the door of a job with benefits and shit.

ALBERTSON'S

This was a sign that I saw while I was at the local grocer paying a bill to keep the lights on at the house.

It just struck me as odd that these two items were on the same row. Are we planning ahead for a disaster later.

CLEAN EATING

Tried another new recipe from Clean Eating Magazine tonight. Tasty & Healthy. Though I might suggest adding some cooked chicken and I did add a little hot sauce for additional flavor. Has around 180 calories per bowl. If you haven't checked out the magazine you might want to. I have tried 3 recipes in the last week and they were all very good.

SSSHHHHHH

TOMORROW

I don't want to jinx it but I have an interview at one of the local casinos tomorrow night. Woohoo. Wish me luck.

WEIRD

I was at Barnes and Noble tonight reading a new book and had a pretty weird experience. I was just sitting their minding my own business when all of a sudden at the table next to me some latina lady had an out of body religious experience. I am not sure what actually happened but they were all praying and then she busted loose like a woman at any black funeral I have ever been to when there was an open casket. Yes I have been to one!!! Just very weird. They couldn't find anywhere better to have this take place than Starbuck's at B&N. I mean I always heard that Starbuck's coffee could be a religious experience but come on already
