Hello,

I started this blog just for the hell of it after reading a few blogs from fellow cyclist friends of mine. Their blogs got me interested in what I might have to say and how often I might say it. These posts will not be strictly about cycling, that was just a title for the blog that came to mind as I was filling out the necessary info......I might change it later. Some of my interests that might get written about on this blog are in no particular order....Cycling, Photography, Food, Working Out ( as opposed to cycling), movies, & trips that I have taken or might take in the future.
Thanks for checking in. If I write something you don't agree with, that's okay. These are my thoughts, not yours.

SERIOUSLY BALLIN'

NOT A CAPTAIN, NOT A COLONEL

He was the Major. Major Taylor to be precise. I am reading a book about this gentleman right now. He was a cyclist in the late 1890's - 1900's. A black cyclist in an era of cycling when cyclists were big stars of the era. I am about a third of the way thru the book and these guys were pretty impressive. I read one passage where he was pushing a 108 in ch ring and another where it was  114 inch gear. It would take a few laps just to get uncorked and really push these gears. But once they did they could fly. On a 23lb bike with this huge gearing and a flying start he was at one time able to do a mile in under 1 minute and 20 seconds. He was able to go in excess of 45mph when the speed of a car at that time topped out at 39mph. I am only about a third of the way thru the book but I am sure I will be even more impressed as I progress. One guy was able o do a mile in 57 seconds. Granted, he was following a train as a drafting device but still. Wow!!!

LINCOLN LAWYER

Matthew McConnaughey actually made an enjoyable movie. Lincoln Lawyer was actually pretty good. It was worth the price of an afternoon admission with free popcorn and my own bottle of water.

SHITTY DRIVERS

BET SHE IS SCARED

I left my workout today and I was pulling of the parking lot some dipshit lady driver decided she need to speed up and see if she could get as close as she could to my front wheel as she cut me off. Did I mention I ride a motorcycle. I was laying on my horn and she just kept coming over in my lane. She must have had to get home to her 12 kids who are living here on my dime. Well I was in a mood so when I realized she was going the same direction as I was (probably because I was following her to scream at her) I decided to follow her as far as she was going. This went on for about 2-3 miles. I didn't get to close in case she did something stupid but I made sure she knew I was there. When she finally made a turn I saw that she had her cell phone in her hand on the steering wheel. What I am wondering is did she have that next to her ear when she cut me off or did she take it out to call her friends or the police because she thought a crazy guy was following her......I hope she was scared shitless!!!

FERRARO DIES

I was not a big fan of Geraldine Ferraro....not a hater either ( she really had no effect on my life, and was probably a good woman) but she did provide me with a bit of a chuckle during the '84 election. I was on a month long motorcycle trip that summer (had a great time) traveling from Las Vegas to Seattle and back down the coast to San Diego. Well, while I was walking around the wharf area of San Francisco I came upon a table selling buttons and the one I saw is probably one of the best I can recall. It was a simple button with a simpler play on words, "Wally & the Beave in '84". Love it. Wish I had bought one.

STEREOTYPES...

.....are right because they are true. Did you see the stroy about the guy who robbed a bank and was caught when he ran out on his fast food bill that he placed after he robbed the bank. Here are the facts as reported

     Bank Robber:       Black Male Adult
     Fast Food Meal:   Ribs!!!!!

Come on Fuzzy Zoeller couldn't have written that one.

5 YEARS

THAT'S HOW LONG IT HAS BEEN

...since my dad passed away. Actually it was 5 years ago yesterday. I don't know why it didn't occur to me yesterday but today after I got done working out it popped into my small mind that yesterday was the "anniversary". I miss my dad a lot. There are days when I am sitting in the house, or watching a tv show that reminds me of him, or when I just feel as though I haven't lived up to his expectations that I find myself in tears over something that normally would feel very small to me. There are many times I look up to the pictures I have of My mom & dad on my living room wall and just wish I could sit down and talk to them.  I miss them & love them.

CELL PHONES

I find that while I am working out at the gym I have to control myself when the dipstick next to me starts talking on the phone while they are "working out". You can't workout and be on the phone. Even Oprah understood this fact. I am not sure that she meant cell phones in particular but the gist was right when she said "if you ain't sweatin', you ain't working out". I mean it is not possible to work out at a pace that will raise the heart rate and induce sweating if you are on the cell phone...either texting or talking. Focus on the workout. You'll be better for it. I have not noticed anyone who is the leader of a country or a company that is on the phone. If your income or life doesn't depend on it put the phone away. Take the time. Allow yourself 1-2 hours to do something good  for yourself. For a number of years now I have taken my phone and put it in my fanny pack wit hthe walet and watch so that I don't have to see/hear it ring while I am working out. That's some " me luv me time".

THE OLD DAYS

18:00 MINUTES

Had a good workout today. Or at least a good workout by my current standards. Back in the 90's I went from around 290 pounds down to around 195-200 lbs. Stayed ther for about 5 years. I have long since gained back 90 percent of that weight. Mostly due to laziness or apathy but alos due to a number of years wear I worked extremely long hours and just couldn't motivate myself to hit the gym, though I did keep up not one but two memberships. I would get back in the mood, or mode, every 6 months or so and do or say all the right things about how I was going to lose this weight this time. And occasionally I would lose 25-35 lbs. Right back it would come with the next crisis at work or in my life.
I still want to lose that weight and if I actually get my diet in line it will happen pretty easily considering the time I am spending in the gym or on my bike these days (due to my current state of unemployment). Today I got on the treadmill after an hour on the stair master. My current time on the treadmill is 40 minutes. I warm up for about 10 minutes and then I alternate 1 minute at 6.2mph and 1 minute at 4.2mph. I just started back on the treadmill and I am still very heavy so that is good for now. But it got me thinking about the past. In 95-96 I was running pretty strong (18 min 5k) and I would go into the gym and do my workouts on the treadmill ( I enjoy the constancy of the gym and the ability to scientifically repeat workouts to measure today against yesterday). Today  I felt pretty good about "run/walking 3 miles in 38 minutes today. In the past I wouldn't have felt like "wasting my time" with such a workout. I used to go into the gym at 2am in the morning before the day of a race and do 45 minutes on a stair master and run 3 miles in around 24 minutes and not even be tired. In fact I would get up 3 hours later and go run a local 5K race just for fun, usually in a sub 19 minute pace.I am able to be happy with what I accomplished today but some where in the back of my mind is that little guy going you can do better. you can go faster. He doesn't care that I way 80 pounds more than when I could do this in the past. My goal for this year is to run a few 5k's in the last 3-4 months of the year in sub 25 minutes. Nothing grand, but it is on the road back. Hopefully I can lose some of the weight that I want to to lose so that this goal is possible. One foot in front of the other and continuing to adjust my diet will definitely make this possible.

WHAT TIME IS IT

NO SERIOUSLY

I woke up at around 11:30 this morning and promptly went to the couch and fell right back to sleep for a couple of hours (one to many beers and a hard workout yesterday). The problem is I don't think that my phone reset automatically as it usually does so I am honestly not sure what time it is right now. I believe that it is 4 pm-ish but not sure. Maybe this post will tell me what time it was posted. Got an interview with 24 hour fitness for a graveyard position tomorrow. Might have another interview for a bartenders position this week also. Have to start a week long photo assignment tomorrow for a local convention company. I have to go back 2-3 times a day and shoot the same location for changes in the set-up. Won't make much from this but I will make it up next week when I shoot the real job for the company. Hopefully make between 1500-2000 for this job.

IS LAS VEGAS CATHOLIC

A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS

I was watching the news this evening and heard a story about the Las Vegas school district. It seems as though there are a number of the local high schools that are falling below acceptable standards. Due to this fact they are relieving some of the teachers and administrators of their duties. I think that is great if they are not doing the required job get them the hell out of the school. That's the way that it works in the real world of employment...either do the job or they will find some one new who can do the job. One problem, the school district has siad that they are not firing the teachers and administrators. They are "relocating" them. Man, do I feel sorry for the new schools that get stuck with these personnel. It made me wonder if our schools were run by former administrators of the Vatican. After all, they were "relocated" also.

CHEAP AT THE MOVIES

SAVE SOME MONEY

I went to the movies yesterday and managed to spend less than $10. Trust me that is no easy feat. Even if you go to the bargain matinee in the afternoon.

Movie ticket                  $7.75
Popcorn                        $0.75 ( Local Casino gives away free small popcorn on Wednesday, upgrade for $0.75
Water                           $0.49 ( Arrowhead water at Albertson's -vs- $5.75 for a Large Soda)
Candy                           $0.01 ( Who knows it was 2 pieces of hard candy I brought along in my pocket to quell
that sweet tooth -vs- $3.75 for a box of butterfinger bites that is actually less
candy than 1 candy bar at 7-11)

Total Cost                      $9.00

I can actually remember when that whole day might cost me as little as $1-2 when I was a kid living on an Air Force base. I don't go to an evening movie unless I have a freeby ticket to get in. I also have a discount card for another brand of theaters that gets you the occasional free movie ticket, or soda and discount candy and popcorn on midweek days

SSSSHHHHHH Again

THE 2ND INTERVIEW

Git a call back for a second interview at a local casino for a bartender job. It's only an on-call position but it is a foot in the door of a job with benefits and shit.

ALBERTSON'S

This was a sign that I saw while I was at the local grocer paying a bill to keep the lights on at the house.

It just struck me as odd that these two items were on the same row. Are we planning ahead for a disaster later.

CLEAN EATING

Tried another new recipe from Clean Eating Magazine tonight. Tasty & Healthy. Though I might suggest adding some cooked chicken and I did add a little hot sauce for additional flavor. Has around 180 calories per bowl. If you haven't checked out the magazine you might want to. I have tried 3 recipes in the last week and they were all very good.

SSSHHHHHH

TOMORROW

I don't want to jinx it but I have an interview at one of the local casinos tomorrow night. Woohoo. Wish me luck.

WEIRD

I was at Barnes and Noble tonight reading a new book and had a pretty weird experience. I was just sitting their minding my own business when all of a sudden at the table next to me some latina lady had an out of body religious experience. I am not sure what actually happened but they were all praying and then she busted loose like a woman at any black funeral I have ever been to when there was an open casket. Yes I have been to one!!! Just very weird. They couldn't find anywhere better to have this take place than Starbuck's at B&N. I mean I always heard that Starbuck's coffee could be a religious experience but come on already

YOU CAN BE MY HUCKABEE

REPUBLICAN

I never really considered myself a republican or a conservative, at least not for the most part. I mean I don't appreciate some one else spending my hard earned money haphazardly but I am also reasonably liberal socially. But I am currently reading Mike Huckabee's new book " A Simple Government" and I have to tell you the man makes a lot of sense. I almost voted for him in the last election but got a little scared off by the perception of him as much more conservative than he probably is in real life. I have seen him on a number of talk shows over the last couple of years and he usually makes a pretty good impression on me each time that I hear him speak. I have to say that without any future gaffs on his part or some unveiling of a secret past life he has a pretty  good chance of getting my vote the next time around.

JOB HUNTING.......

....CAN BE FUN

Went to an interview at one of the local casinos today. Hopefully I will get a job. With benefits and shit!!!.
The funny part was that when I walked in there were two ladies sitting there waiting for their appointment. One was drop dead gorgeous and had on one very short mini-type skirt. If was of the mind I could have told you the color of her panties. Did I mention she was hot.
Women number two was a moderately attractive lady dressed what appeared to be very professionally and well put together. On first glance I would say that she was dressed appropriately for the interview. Did I mention that she "APPEARED" to be dressed very professionally. AS this lady walked toward the office in which the interview was to be held you couldn't help but notice that her skirt, which was slit in the back, was slit entirely too high for her ass. Both myself and the guy next to me turned to each other with a look of total disbelief. We didn't say to much of it until she came back out of the office after the interview. She walked right by us again to get out of the building. As she did so you couldn't help but get another show. Unlike the last lady I don't think she was wearing panties. She went combat to an interview. The funny part was that the older (60+) lady next to me had also noticed this situation. She was like "damn" and was just shaking her head. As I went in for my interview the situation became even funnier to me at least. As you walked into the room you realized that the lady doing the interview was sitting behind a desk and when the girl got up to leave the office this lady had to have gotten a real eyeful as the girl was leaving.
Seriously, don't people have a mirror in their home. That skirt probably didn't fit her 5 years ago and she is still trying to fit into it. She obviously has no real friends who might bother to tell her " hey I can see you crack" in that outfit. She  will probably get a job and I will be sitting at home collecting unemployment.

YOU WILL HATE YOURSELF TOMORROW

ONLY THE LAST .2 HURTS

Just got done watching the movie "The Spirit of the Marathon" on the documentary channel. They follow 7-8 runners as they train and compete in the 2005 Chicago Marathon. I thought that they did a very good job of capturing the nature of training and running a marathon. AS a veteran of 4 marathons an countless other races of varying distances I can certainly relate to what these folks go through to get to the finish line. It almost sparked a thought that maybe I could do that again. I say might as my last marathon was 13 years ago and I am very overweight at this point in my life. I know what it takes and I just don't know if I can convince myself of that dedication. Maybe a 1/2 marathon. My problem with running, well almost any measurable activity, is that I become very competitive with myself during training. One day needs to be better than the last and that's how I end up getting hurt. In the past I have run anything from 100 meters (junior high) to the marathon. I have run a half mile in 2:08 when I was in the 8th grade and run the mile in 4:40 in the tenth grade. Probably could have been pretty good if I wasn't so into football. No small guys in that sport. I have no illusions that I could even match my times of my late thirties much less those earlier capabilities. Could be fun to get back in shape and see what I could do on the roads again.

OUCH!!!!

MOTORCYCLE DOWN

While I was out today I saw a guy get hit on his motorcycle. I think the guy on his left moved over and cut him off. I didn't see the accident until he was already going down on the ground. Looked like he took a pretty good tumble. I know I was doing about 45 at that time and he was probably doing the same. I actually chased after the guy who hit him because, for a moment, it looked like he was going to flee the scene. More likely he was jsut startled and going to the driveway at the Home Depot to turn around and go back to the accident. He was a young kid and he probably just didn't see the biker. That is one of the most dangerous things about riding in a city. I feel bad or the guy but I still believe that the rider can prevent the majority of the accidents we are in if we pay attention to the other drivers intentions and err on the safe side and give them plenty of room. God be with him.
