Hello,

I started this blog just for the hell of it after reading a few blogs from fellow cyclist friends of mine. Their blogs got me interested in what I might have to say and how often I might say it. These posts will not be strictly about cycling, that was just a title for the blog that came to mind as I was filling out the necessary info......I might change it later. Some of my interests that might get written about on this blog are in no particular order....Cycling, Photography, Food, Working Out ( as opposed to cycling), movies, & trips that I have taken or might take in the future.
Thanks for checking in. If I write something you don't agree with, that's okay. These are my thoughts, not yours.

Couldn't Work Today

Well the weather in Vegas sucks today, and will likely continue thru the weekend. My bosses aren't happy about it but there is nothing I can do to keep my crew working and generating revenue.

THE FIGHTER

Well since I couldn't work I went to the movies. I saw "The Fighter" with Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale.
Very good movie. I highly recommend it. For those of you who don't know it is the story of the early career of a boxer named Mickey Ward and his drug addled brother. Bale does a great job and should probably win an Oscar this year. For the first 3/4's of the movie he plays Mickey's crack-head brother. In the last quarter he gets out of prison and turns his life around. It is phenomenal the way he portrays both sides of this person so well.

Mickey Ward had three epic fights with Arturo Gatti. One of the fights was on TV as a date came over to my  house. We almost didn't go out that night. I was watching the fight on my couch while waiting for her to arrive and when we were about to leave she said that we could wait and watch the end of the fight. Felt like the right thing to do was go on the date.

One fighter I like to watch fight for  a while back in the day was a guy by the name of Rocky Gannon, a cruiserweight. He had 2 tough fights against one guy, sorry don't know his name. These fights were tremendous slugfests. The guys would just wail on each other until the other guy could no longer get back on his feet. Good fights to watch by guys that were not considered great fighters.

ANSWERS

These are the answers to the questions that I get asked every single day without fail.

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER

no they don't bite, no they are not mean, yes they are parrots, 2 boys and 2 girls, between 7 and 33 years old, they are all about 20 years old (to avoid further questions), the green one, it's a 4 bird hybrid, harrah's is 3 buildings that way, o'sheas is across the intersection, I don't believe they are still serving breakfast, the bus is $5 for 2 hours and $7 for a 24 hour pass, they might poop on you, no they can't sense fear, no i am not worried about them biting my ear, 1 for $14 and 3 for $20, no you can't use your camera, no I can't take a tip to allow you to shoot your own photos, no the birds aren't cold, no their claws don't hurt, yes they could bite you, but they won't, no I don't own the birds, they are owned by an animal park in Miami, no they can't fly, their wings are clipped, because they like me, no you can't touch them, no you can't pet them, not they don't talk, sometimes they say hello but they aren't trained to do it, he is a 4 bird hybrid, a green wing, a scarlet, a blue & gold, and a military, these three birds plus one more, the imperial palace is 2 buildings that way.

So you can see my day can be a series of absolutely inane questions that never seem to stop.

It wears you out some days

NOTES FROM WORK

What a Day today

The day started off normal enough but it went a little strange from there.

CRAZY GUY

Made the mistake of saying hello to a man who I came to find was at least a little bit off of his rocker. He was standing right in front of me telling me how he was called by the police about a recent missing person, his Mercedes was stolen, he knows Sheriff Gillespie personally,  he has a license (not sure for what), and he can dance like Michael Jackson (did I mention he was like 70 and white). I literally told this guy that I didn't give a shit about his life and he needed to get the hell away from me (very out of character for me). I di see him make a buck or two for some dance he did for some tourist. Let's just say it was a 70 year old white guy with no rhythm impersonating Michael Jackson. I did get a good laugh out of that.

SEIZURE GUY

Not long after that a guy came by and had his photo taken. He and  his family started to walk off without looking at the photos (no big deal, it happens). A moment later they started back to look at the photos and I noticed a gentleman acting a little weirdly. I didn't know what to make of it at first because we see so many strange people on the Las Vegas Strip. I soon realized that the gentleman was having a full-on epileptic seizure. I couldn't do anything to help catch him. Luckily his wife was right behind him to catch him so he didn't hit his head. I gave the family my margaritaville hoodie so that he wouldn't bang his head on the sidewalk. That hoodie is toast since he bit his tongue and bled all over it. Not a big deal, it was only done so that he would be protected and/or comfortable until the ambulance arrived. The paramedics showed up and got him upright and transported him to the hospital to be checked out. Hope he and his family are doing well.

MAN IN THE BUSHES

Shortly thereafter a homeless guy decided he needed to sleep in the bushes next to our workstation. Had to take a photo. Hoe could I resist.

I titled the photo " What Happens in Vegas, Passes Out in Vegas"

HE was chased away by management shortly after this photo was taken.

RUBY IS A BAD GIRL

Ruby is a Green Wing Macaw. While I was inside the store a grop came up and had their photos taken with the birds. While holding the birds a lady in the group had her finger bitten by Ruby. I felt bad for her until I asked my assistant what happened and he told me he had told the lady to not touch the bird. Guess what the lady did the first chance she got......people are stoooooopid.

SUMMARY

Overall the people on the strip are not the people of old. They are cheap and looking for something for free. Nobody wants to pay for anything or what we offer is to expensive. We are too expensive but a 40 dollar cocktail is okay. Everybody, employees, the birds, tourists, were all annoying today. I couldn't wait to go home today. My new employee, Jeremy, did a great job today and he has been a fast learner. Might make him my new shift supervisor so that I can take some time off and rest.

MAYBE TOMORROW

I NEED TO WORKOUT

I haven't worked out in about 10 days and it is killing me. The first couple of days off were on purpose to rest the legs. The last 7 days have been due to an injury to my right hip flexor and adductor muscles. Don't know how I did it but it hurt like hell for about 3-4 days. The pain has been decreasing daily for the last few days. I can actually sleep now. I wasn't able to find a comfortable position for the first few days. Had to place a pillow between my legs to help reduce the stress on my hip.  It felt as though I had subluxed my hip joint at one point and I could barely lift my right leg it hurt so much.

THE BIRDS AT WORK

I was bored at work on Christmas Day so I had a little fun with one of the birds that I work with. Her name is Christina and she is a Scarlet Macaw. Pretty bird with a bit of an attitude at times. She has bonded with me so she fucks wit everyone else when they try and take her from me.

I got quite a few funny looks from this and it actually helped generate a little bit of business and most importantly kept me from being bored during a slow time.

Thoughts on Christmas Eve 2010

I have got off at 8pm, went to the grocery story (I will explain later), and went to the neighborhood bar and had three tall guiness drafts. These were the thoughts that came to mind

 I TRIPLE DOG DARE YOU

The annual 24hrs of "The Christmas Story" is on TBS. Remember when "A Wonderful Life" was the christmas favorite every year. I love them both. Kinda makes me want a "Red Rider 200 Round Range Model Air Rifle". If I get one I hope I don't shoot my eye out.

REMARKABLE FUDGE

Without a doubt my mom made the best fudge ever. The recipe is from Better Homes & Garden. It is called "Remarkable Fudge". It is far less milky than any other fudge I have ever had.  We once measured it and found that a 13x9 dish had about 12,000 calories of pure sugar goodness. I have made this most every year since about 1989 when I moved out of my parents house.

Had  to come back to this post. I forgot the favorite reason that I love making fudge.....licking the bowl. I remember doing this every time my mom made fudge, and I still love doing it to this day. I don't care if I give away every piece of the finished fudge but I have to clean out the pan it was cooked in.

I once made my fudge in a teflon pan (word to the wise, don't do that). After I poured all of the fudge into the dish there was nothing left in the pan. Talk about disappointment. That just wouldn't work. I went to the store and bought more ingredients and immediately made another batch in an aluminum pan. I had about 8 pounds of fudge around the house when I got done. Needless to say I gave away a lot of that fudge.

I even once made birthday cakes with candles out of this fudge for three friends of mine. Actually 2 were b'day presents and one was a gift to a woman I liked a lot then and still care a lot about now.

I had something else to write about but that thought left my mind and I have been unable to retrieve it.

Merry Christmas to all.

UB

I remembered that thought that got away from me. Uncle Buck, one of the best movies ever. John Candy at his best.  I watch this movie whenever it is on the tube. Have seen parts of it north of 50 times and it is still awesome

CHRISTMAS STORY

LEWIS BLACK

I heard a story on the History Channel this morning. It was about the story behind the legend of St. Nicholas. According to historians this was an actual person. He was a Greek Bishop who lived in Turkey in the 4th Century. One day, while trying to save 3 women from a life of prostitution due to poverty, he threw 3 balls of gold thru their bedroom window. How generous. One question....while he was doing so was he heard to have yelled "ho, ho, ho"........couldn't help it. Made me start.my day with a good chuckle

LOST SYMBOL

Finished my first book on the new Nook E-Reader. LOst Symbol by Dan Brown of the DaVinci Code fame. Good read not overly tasking but enjoyable nonetheless. Definitely better than Angels & Demons

NOOK-E

Seems like Barnes and Noble lost out on a great advertising for their new E-Reader.

YUMMY

GREAT DINNER

Made myself a fantastic dinner tonight. Sauerkraut & Sausage with Garlic Mashed Potatoes. It is a wonderful rainy winter day meal, which is what today is in Vegas. Mom use to make this when we were kids and it was great them. The only thing that was missing was a loaf of good bread with some butter...forgot to pick it up at the store. Different recipe than mom's but it was damn good.

Sauerkraut & Polish Sausage

6 smoked bacon slices, cut into 2-inch-wide strips
1 large onion, sliced
1 carrot, chopped
1 2-pound jar sauerkraut, rinsed, drained well
2 cups dry white wine
1 1/2 cups chicken stock or canned low-salt broth
1 tablespoon caraway seeds
4 juniper berries, crushed, or 1 tablespoon gin
1 1/2 pounds kielbasa sausage, cut into 3-inch lengths

Preheat oven to 300°F. Place bacon, onion and carrot in heavy large ovenproof Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Sauté until onion is tender but not brown, about 5 minutes. Squeeze as much liquid as possible from sauerkraut. Add sauerkraut to Dutch oven. Add wine, stock, caraway seeds and juniper berries. Bring to simmer. Cover tightly, place in oven and bake 1 hour.
Add kielbasa to Dutch oven, pushing into sauerkraut. Cover and bake 1 hour. Season to taste with salt and pepper. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Rewarm over medium heat, stirring frequently.)

Try it you'll love it

COLD & WET IN VEGAS

The weather sucks right now in vegas.....it's been raining for the better part of 3 days......

OUCH

My hip has hurt since Sunday night.....3 days now......enough that I can't workout.....hell I can hardly sleep with it the way it is.....I have no clue what I did.......I was fine at work all day Sunday....I stopped on the way home for a couple of beers and a burger at my friends bar and when I got up it hurt like hell. It is finally starting to get better after 3 days but it will still be a couple more before I can workout. That will be a week without working out....that sucks

COLD IN VEGAS

For those of you who do not think that it gets cold in vegas let this photo be proof otherwise

I shot this photo off of the Weather Channle so it has to be true....I am right. It was only up for about 30 seconds luckily I had the foresight to grab my phone and shoot this really quickly before it was gone

NOOK

The new Nook is really cool. It may only be for a short time but it is sort of like when I got my first digital SLR in 2003. It is actually got me wanting to read again. I have never been a person who reads extremely quickly but I have blazed through about 400 pages of the new Dan Brown book " Lost Symbol" in just a couple of days when I get a chance to read. Usually I only have time to do so on my lunch break or when I get home. The last couple of days I have actually gone into Barnes & Noble and had a cup of coffee and rread for like an hour or two. Sounds boring but it felt pretty good just to relax and take some time without people or animals bothering me for a couple of hours. Plus...it was cheap

NOOK E

STARBUCKS

Had my first cup of Starbucks today. How long have they been around?  My Opinion. ....I wasn't missing much.....tasted like coffee.....what's the big deal

BOUGHT A NOOK

Anybody got any crannies? Decided I wanted an E-Reader last night. I know I could buy books but I like the convenience of being able to get a new book without having to go to the store.

MEETING GOALS

It has been tough with my current work schedule (approx 70 hours a week)  to get in all the work outs that I would like. But I am efforting to change my schedule so that I get up in the am and do my workout, be it riding or the gym. I need to go to bed much earlier so that I can get up at 6-6:30 in the am and get my workout in because it is just to easy to say I am tired at the end of a 10 hour workday on my feet. I should be able to get asleep by 11 or 11:30 most nights. I might need a little chemical help form my tylenol pm stash but I want to do this so I have to find a way to succeed. I missed most of last week with the " i am too tired excuse" and I don't like the way I feel when I miss workouts. I find myself eating badly and going for a few drinks when I don't workout. The workout is my moral compass sort of speak. When I don't workout I find it very easy to talk myself into doing something that isn't good for my health or long term fitness goals. Just had to get that off my chest so that I can feel as though I have begun to address it

DAYS 9 and 10 of 16

Gotta a couple of workouts in the last 2 day. Spent 45 minutes yesterday & 1 hour today on the trainer. Not hard workouts but good spins to get the legs moving and to start back in the right direction after a long work week.
I am trying to get up in the morning and put in at least 1 hour either on the trainer or in the gym. It's just to tough to do consistently after working 10 hours everyday. I am on my feet for the entire time so the legs get pretty tired at work. After a few days of getting up early and suffering through work I should be able to come home and be ready for bed much earlier so that I can wake up rested and ready to go.
It was so much easier years ago.Wouldn't it be great to be physically young again

RANDOM THOUGHTS

It is amazing how inconsiderate some people can be......

NAKED WOMEN PHOTOS

While I was talking to a customer, who had his young child in a stroller, a total stranger came along and placed 5-6 photos of naked women into the child's stroller. I mean really how stupid can somebody be. No wonder this society is so fucked up.

CRAZY LADY

Witnessed one of our resident crazy ladies talking to a beer can today....not just talking but actually arguing with the can.....I think it was corona....maybe if she had a real beer she wouldn't have been so upset..haha

ATHLETIC CLUB

If Jimmy Buffet had a health club would he call it Gymmy Buffet's. What kind of workouts would there be. Group Margarita Mixing Classes....They supply the blender and you workout hard enough to supply the energy. .....Do 50 laps of swimming across the giant blender.....

VERY LONG DAY

11 hours on my feet makes for a very long day so no workout today...plan on being back at it tomorrow after a normal 8 hour day. Probably hop in the eliptical and due some intervals with resistance & elevation. We'll see how it goes.
Came home after work. Skipped a Christmas get together at Tommy Rocker's. Too tired. Came in had a chocolate chip cookie and then started in on some wine to relax. Good buzz. Cheap too. $1.97 a bottle at Trader Joe's. Vola Sangiovese. And they are not going to have it much longer.

NEW EMPLOYEE

How is it that when you interview people for a job and you let them know that the job involves a lot of talking and dealing with customers they become a mute on the day the start their new job. My new employee seemed to be a pretty good guy that was able to talk to people when I interviewed him. Now I need to get him talking. He can handle all of the technical aspects, just has to start talking. He is a good guy and I have hope for him. I think he will come around. If not......next.

GONNA PISS SOME PEOPLE OFF.....

...when I start making my employees change the way that they perform their duties and when I change the expectations that I have of them in their job. I have to change some things to make the operation more successful and to insure that I have a job in the future.

T-SHIRT IDEA

Came up with this one the other day. Three hand signs.....i.e.  Hook' em Horns ( Football Fan),  Hang Loose ( Easy going), Two in the Pink (Party Girl).
Put each of these in  a box with a caption in a row on the front of a t-shirt.

LONG DAYS

I have worked about 40 hours in the last 4 days and it might not end for a while....trying to  make the 2nd chance at this job work out for the best. The scary part is that I would like to have a part time 2nd job on graveyard to help with the bills. A 2-3 day bartending job would be great
I have on of my major financial concerns under control. Now I have one or two more to take care of...still seriously thinking of giving up my house and declaring bankruptcy so that I can my finances back to zero. Sounds bad but not as bad as they are in their current state.  I have to make a decision in the next couple of days or it will be out of my hands at least as far as the house is concerned.
The only reason I keep the house is so that I have a place for the dogs to run and play. They have never lived in an apartment. They have always had a yard.
Well that is enough for tonight. Time to go to bed.
Good dinner tonight. Picked up some salmon and had a baked potato with it. Yummy
Good night

DAY 8 of 12

Got a workout in today. Took two days off due to working long hours. Found that I have been talking myself into being tired when the work was done and not going to the gym. Just forced myself to go tonite. I am going to have to adjust the length and type of work outs for a while if I am going to have to work 10+ hours. I am thinking of limiting my workouts to 1 hour each day but I am going to try and increase the intensity of those workouts, mostly by making each workout some type of "interval" workout. This will be the most effective use of the time I can allot to working out. I have to make sure I get to the gym, both for my health and my sanity

Wednesday, December 8, 2010

LONG DAYS

Worked another 10+ hour day so I took a couple of days off from workouts to get used to the hours. I am planning on getting back in the gym tomorrow. It's gonna make the days exceptionally long but in some weird way it may be beneficial. I mean if I have these longs days and then workout  and come home and go to bed  at a reasonable hour I may actually quit spending money I don't have since I won't have the time to spend it. We'll see how that works out.

A NEW DAY BEGINS

Today I started back at my old work position that I was demoted from at the end of October. Feels good to be appreciated for my work. I am not sure how long this job is going to last. I still feel as though when the construction at the store takes place they are going to do away with our job. I am still looking into other positions everyday so I hopefully won't be left out in the cold.
I think the owners of the company and my GM realized that I was actually working hard for them. I am not saying there weren't improvements to be made but I feel that it was handled poorly on their end. The guy they brought in to replace me was a joke. I actually told my GM that I was insulted that this was the guy they brought in to replace me. I understood that if they wanted to replace me they could, but at least bring in some one with some skills and talent.
It means that I am working long days again but i really don't mind that. It keeps me busy and stops me from spending money I can't afford to be spending.
We will see how it goes. I can only go in and give an honest effort and do the best that I can.

Day & of 7 of 9

Workout: 55 minutes Stairs
               35 minutes Treadmill
               35 minutes eliptical

Weight: 284

Pretty good workout. Felt good, not run down. Had plenty of energy. I have to get better with watching  my eating. Makes no sense to work this hard and only pay attention to half of the equation, especially since this week I am starting to work a lot more hours at the job.

MOVIES

Went to see the  movie "Morning  Glory". Pretty good movie. Good laughs. The weatherman is funny as shit in his remote scenes.

Does anyone  else have an issue with the fact that Jeff Bridges is playing a John Wayne role in the movie True Grit. Seriously , Jeff Bridges.

SWEET TOMATOES

Ate there today. Pretty healthy place....unless you have 2 plates of food and 3 muffins.

DAY 6 0F 7

Workout: 60 minutes Stair Master
30 Minutes  - New Precor machine. I am calling the Ellipti-stair

WORKOUT

Good workout after a day off. Not extremely hard but I stepped up the Stair Master a little. Shifted up the resistance every two minutes instead of every 3 minutes. Tried a new machine they have in the gym. It is sort of an eliptical and sort of a stairmaster. Can't say as I it was a great workout but it was a different workout. Good change of pace. Probably go back to the traditional eliptical where you can raise the elevation and the resistance. I like to treat the eliptical like a bike and I couldn't get the revolutions high enough. I like to be in the area of 180-190 per minute and I could only get this up to around 120. Plus I didn't sweat enough and that is really important when I evaluate a workout.

FOR GOOD OR BAD

I should be back in my old position at my current job by at the latest Tuesday but possibly tomorrow. I was demoted in the end of October and the person they brought  in to replace me was a disaster. So now I am back. Not sure if that is good or bad but I am going to learn from the past and do my best to make it a success this time. I am not saying that I couldn't have been a better employee/manager but I know that the guy they brought it was a joke, He is a nice enough guy but he has no clue to the business we have here in Las Vegas. He came from New Jersey and worked at 6 Flags over some hood in New Jersey. He just couldn't understand how different our environment is than the one he came from. It means more hours and more stress but it also means more money (that's important right now).

WEIRD DREAM # 2

I had another one of those weird dreams the other night. It started out that I had a pet monkey that I apparently got form some sort of a rescue foundation ( i have never wanted a monkey). After a while I came to the decision that I couldn't keep the monkey and I found a vet or a shelter to take it to (that's not the weird part). When I got to the vet they were examining the monkey and they asked me to pick it up and when I did I did it like I pick up the parrot Ruby that I work with (which is by the beak). When I went to pick her up by the beak it came off. I mean the whole top of her beak broke off and blood was spurting from the area. That's where the dream ended. Weird huh? I don't know what to make of that.

OBSERVATIONS

Two things I heard on the news this week got my attention

1. The US government invested in BLIMPS as a spy tool. Didn't the Hindenburg teach them anything. Plus, how damn secretive can a blimp be. I mean really they are huge. What is the foreigner going to think "Oh look it's a cute blimp flying over our encampment" . Very scary

2. The Pope said that condoms were okay to prevent Aids in cases like " when you're with a prostitute". Really prostitution is okay with the catholic church. Wow no wonder that religion is so fucked up.

DAY OFF - I NEED IT

Decided to take a day off from working out as I have put in 5 good days in a row. Might change my mind later and get on the trainer but I think I will save it for the AM.

My brother graduated from a drug rehab program today. I went to watch and I hope he succeeds but it is a long road for him to rebuild his life and the trust of those around him. This is a good first step but there are many more to come. I wasn't going to go but I felt like I needed to. How can I hope for good things in my life without celebrating those that happen in some one else's life. Good Luck Cameron.

DAY 5 OF 5

Short post today, I am getting tired from the tylenol PM I took about 45 minutes ago and don't feel like writing right now. More tomorrow

Workout: 35 minutes each on Stairmaster, Treadmill, & Eliptical
Weight: 284. Ate and drank to recover from a hard day yesterday. Still getting my eating under control, but I haven't had a beer or wine in 6 days now. Feels good

Wednesday, December 1, 2010

DAY 4 OF 4

WORKOUT: 50 minutes Stairmaster
                      50 minutes spin class
Weight:           282
Lost 4.5 lbs since yesterday I would say that is due in a big way to water weight and the
fact that I had a bit of stomach distress during the spin workout

Got in the gym to do a workout today. Started with 15 minutes of Stairmaster. Then it was 50 minutes of spin class at the LVAC. Mary's 6pm class. This class is mostly a series of shorter intervals so it is a pretty good workout in a short time frame. She likes to say that we ride about 20 miles during her class. Can't quite believe that since  I can't do that on my own bike on the indoor trainer if I set it to the lowest resistance. But I would say it is good for about 15 miles. Followed up the spin class with another 35 minutes on the stair master. Took it a bit easier this time because I had an intestinal issue while riding in the spin class so I felt a little weaker than I normally would after the spin class. All in all a pretty decent workout.

127 HOURS

Went to see this movie today. I would highly recommend it to all. It is sort of like the movie "Castway" with Tom Hanks. Basically a one person movie with flashbacks to prior events in his life as he tries to survive 5 days trapped by a rock in the Canyonlands of Utah/Arizona. True story (though I am sure it is dramatized a bit). Well told, Well shot & directed. James Franco was pretty good as the star of the movie.

BIGGEST LOSER

I am not one that normally goes in for the "reality" genre of television shows but I have to admit that for the last few years I have been a bit of a Biggest Loser junkie. Maybe its because I am a big guy who needs to lose weight or maybe because in the past I have lost 90+ lbs only to gain it back. I don't know why for sure but I truly feel proud of some of the folks on this show and I find myself rooting for them. Not just to win but to lose the weight and be successful in the future lives. It is amazing what they achieve in a relatively short period of time "on the ranch". One guy last year lost 260 lbs in about 6 months. No surgery. Just hard  work and a good diet. The guy weighed 525 pounds when it started. I watch this show and I feel guilty about the excuses that I make when I don't go to the gym or ride the bike so it helps motivate me a little to get back on track wit h my own workouts.

WEIRD DREAM

I don't normally remember my dreams after I wake up but today I had a strange one. In the dream I was in an organized wrestling match. Normally these are one-on-one but in this case I was wrestling two opponents. Not at the same time but sort of a round robin kind of thing. The thing was that in the other match one guy had definitely won the match and the referee had denied him the victory to everyone' astonishment. Nest to the wrestling mat there was a young women who was yelling at the referee about the mistake he had made but he wouldn't change his decision. That's about where it ended but it was just strange to me. I wrestled in high school but had rarely though about it since then so I am not sure where this came from. Hmm.

DAY 3 OF 3

Workout: 1 Hour Indoor Trainer
Weight:    285.6

Back on the indoor trainer today. First time in a couple of weeks. Felt good to be back on the bike. Did one of my favorite, self created workouts. 10 minute warm-up and then the work. 4 repeats of 6 minute interval with 5 minutes of recovery and then cool down for about 10 minutes. The intervals were done to the song "Kings & Queens" by 30 Seconds to Mars and the recovery was done to "What a Wonderful World" by Israel Kamakawiwo"ole. Two cool songs one tough workout. Didn't quite work quite as hard as I have in the past on this one, but that will come in time.
I am thinking that a good goal for getting back on the bike beyond training rides might be the Tour de Fire 2011 on May 7th. This is one tough ride that has the potential for being very hot at the finish. I did much of this route a little over a year ago and it ended up being 104 at the end of the ride. There is a 60 or 70 mile option and that is what I will be attempting. Definitely not the century ride.I will hopefully get back on the road for training rides in early march which will give me two months off the indoor trainer to get used to the roads again.

DAY TWO OF 365

Got another workout in today. 1 hour 5 minutes on the eliptical. Used music and workout from one of my favorite sites, cadencerevolution.com. Today was Cadence Revolution 105. quick warm up and then 5 hills with increasing length and resistance. The first hil was 3 minutes long then it was 3.5 min, 5 min, 7 min, 8 min with 50% recovery in between each hill repeat. Pretty good sweat. I was going to hop on the treadmill but the legs weren't feeling up to it so I passed. That will come later in the week. It's not much of a workout on the treadmill but it helps get a little more time in. Right now it is mostly just walking with a little jog at the end. In a month or so I will probably move to the other gym and use the indoor track to get that time in. Tomorrow is supposed to be an indoor trainer day. 1 hour to 1hour 15min.
Entered a little contest on one of my favorite websites www.fatcyclist.com. It's a simple contest. Weigh yourself today and lose 10 lbs by December 23rd. Not much of a chanllenge if I actually watch what I eat and drink over that time frame. It just serves a s a way to jump start my goal for the next year.9-10 lbs a month.

THIS BOTHERS ME......

The are at least a couple of things that bother me when I am working out at the gym. But the most bothersome of these "crimes" is when I see people on the cardio equipment in the gym and they are more interested in texting or talking to their friends while they are "supposedly" working out. How can you possibly be focusing on your workout while texting. You have to slow down the workout so that you can actually read and type. Please people, focus on why you are actually in the gym.....your friends can survive for an hour while you make yourself healthier. Put the phone away....leave it in the car, lock it in a locker, just don't set it on the machine you are using. I know the excuse is "well that's what I use to listen to music". Buy an IPOD they cost just about nothing. Your fat ass will thank you.

DAY ONE - BACK IN THE GYM

Finally got my fat ass back in the gym after taking a week off to get over this pain in the ass cold I have been fighting since last Sunday. Took it pretty easy got in 75 minutes on the stair master at a mid level. One steadily ever- increasing hill. Up the step resistance every 3 minutes for 42 minutes and then did the same every two minutes until I finished the machine limit of 63 minutes and then cooled down for 10 minutes.
The goals for the coming year (before I reach the ripe old, AARP qualified, age of 50) are pretty simple. Get to the gym at least 5 days, and hopefully 6 days, a week for at least one hour. This will hopefully grow to 2-3 hours in the next couple of months. In addition to the gym I will be on the bike using my indoor trainer (I am a cold-weenie) in front of the tv with surround sound and a DVD player.
Hopefully these workout goals will lead to the completion of further achievement related goals. In no particular order:
     1. Ride at least one century
     2. Run a 5K
     3. Run a 10K
     4. Run a Half-marathon (definitely late in the year)
     5. Ride the Road to the Sun in Glacier National Park, Montana
     6. Weigh under 220 lbs (hopefully by summer, that gives me 6 months to achieve this goal)
     7. Continue weight loss to be below 200lbs (time line is the end of August, 9 months to lose 85 lbs)
That is only 9 lbs a month or about two pounds per week so it should be doable

That's enough for now, might add more at a later date as things look more doable & achievable. If some goals are reached earlier we will add more goals to keep striving to achieve
I have not placed any time related runs or rides, that is not the goal. The goal is to finish each of these goals not win the races. I will never reach the times I have run in the past . Also when I have strove for time related goals before I become a little workout obsessed and end up getting hurt and having to back off  from my workouts.
I know that everything will not go perfect so that is why I have stretched this out over a long period of time. Work will get in the way, life will get in the way, as well as injuries and such. So I will keep going one day at a time and see where it gets me. Follow along and see how it goes. Thanks

SOME DAYS YOUR ARE ONE DAY OLDER, OTHER DAYS YOU ARE ONE YEAR OLDER

Happy Birthday to me. Today I turned 49. I don't feel that old. Okay some days I do. But I don't feel, or feel that I look like many other people I see who are my age. There are days where the stress of living in these economic times really feel as though they are taking their toll, mentally and physically. I using the next year to get my life back in shape. Physically, Mentally, & Fiscally. I may have to take a few steps backwards to get to a point where I can start to refill the hole that I have created, but I intend on improving all aspects of my life over the coming year. I have a motto "BE Better Everyday" and I haven't been living up to it lately but I am going to do my best to adhere to that thought. I don't say I will succeed everyday. But as I have heard from a few coaches in the past "if you are going to fail make sure that you give it 100% when you do so, you might be surprised at the outcome". So Happy Birthday to me and good luck over the next year.

Day One

I just created this site and did not intend on having much to write about. I started this tonite after reading some of the posts by a fellow cyclist (Steve Patchin) and it got me interested in just how this process works.
Just a few notes about me. I am an overworked, underpaid, overweight everyday citizen who has, and is, experiencing many of the financial and employment downfalls that have beset many others in our country. Some days are tougher than others. Sometimes it's just a struggle to get through these days (that sounds a lot darker than it was meant). Thankfully there are friends and family out there that make it easier. Sometimes we just need to talk to friends that have been thru some of the same things that I am experiencing to realize that it will be okay.....eventually.
I was trying to get my workouts back in order so that at least something was going the way that I want it to but this week I have been stricken by the cold bug and have had to take a few days off to get better. Unfortunately being sick does not stop me from wanting to eat, it only stops me from going to the gym or getting on the trainer.
I want to get more consistent with my workouts and cycling so that next year I can enjoy some of the longer planned rides and runs that happen in Las Vegas. I also would like to take a few trips to enjoy some longer rides in other areas of the country.....the one that most comes to mind is "The Road To The Sun" in Glacier National Park, Montana. It's not a particularly long ride (50 miles) but it is in a beautiful place and has some serious climbing. Let's see if I get to these places this year...either way I am going to continue to train as though I was going to get there and see where the chips fall.
